Making a Difference -“Giving kids a head-start to succeed in life”
“Taking a girl to school is a bad investment!” – Proclaimed Kabogo, a father of six girls who was a laborer- worker of mine at my local farm house company in Arusha, Tanzania.
He continued to say, “I don’t want to waste money on a girl going to school because she will get married, benefit my in-laws and stay at home to raise the children.”
A rush of emotions came over me; shock, anger and disappointment. The irony he was missing was I, a girl, was his employer and was paying him a salary.
However in 1998, his way of thinking was the norm and not the exception in my community in rural Arusha.
I realized that the only way to combat this mindset which seemed to be rampant among many parents within my community was to create a Daycare Center for young children- both girls and boys hence Engutoto Daycare Center was born in October, 1998.
My challenge was to convince parents like Kabogo to send me their young children from ages 2 - 5 years old to a daycare Centre where they would learn to read, write, draw and develop their natural creativity.
